Collaborative innovation at SWISS TXT

Collaborative innovation at SWISS TXT

Collaborative innovation. It's a concept that you often hear mentioned. But what exactly does it mean and in what way is this kind of approach important for SWISS TXT? I have been taking a closer look at the subject and will explain it for you here.

Most challenges cannot be solved alone. They require a collaborative approach, if sustainable solutions for society and the economy are to be found. In the same way, innovation often needs several different parties to be involved. They bring different perspectives, backgrounds and experience, resulting in a joint vision that generates a better outcome.

SWISS TXT has been adopting the collaborative innovation approach for a number of years now. On the one hand, we are involved in various European research and innovation projects and, on the other, we participate in all kinds of networks such as the EBU (European Broadcast Union), where we discuss matters relating to technology or strategy with other public service media companies.

Our own focus for innovation is on applied research, i.e. how to integrate cutting-edge technologies so that they can be used in real SRG services.  To that end, we establish research partnerships across Europe with universities, technology providers and other broadcasters. The objective then is to acquire and implement national and European research projects (for example under Horizon 2020). We are currently participating in the following research projects: MediaVerse, EASIER, 5G MediaHub and InnoSuisse Flagship IICT.

The innovation team works closely with SRG's strategy departments and aims to identify new areas for innovation at an early stage. In the research projects, experts from SRG and the business units (TV & Radio) then work closely together to make those concepts a reality.

In order to strengthen this collaborative approach, both internally and externally, we have set ourselves the goal of communicating more frequently about ongoing projects and, in parallel, setting up an online innovation hub called “Future Media Hubs”. The focus will be on three main areas: collaborative innovation, accessibility and digital media operations. The principal aims are to encourage knowledge-sharing, to learn from one another and to boost added value, especially in relation to the social impact (public value) of specific innovation projects.
